The Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling Team is excited to be racing the Tour of The Gila, UCI 2.2 event this week in Silver City, NM. With a solid 7-man roster, the team is poised to tackle the altitude, sprints, and grueling days in the crosswinds. The event began today with the 91 mile Mogollon Road Race. With road construction obstructing the mountain top finish, the racers only had 3K of the climb to traverse before the finish line.
Roster for the event: Alfredo Rodriguez, Alex Hoehn, Innokenty Zavyalov, Eder Frayre, Nick Torraca, Connor Brown, Brian McCulloch
We checked in with Nick Torraca after the stage to see how the day went for the team.
Elevate-KHS: Nick! Thanks for taking the time to chat tonight and give us a run down of today’s stage!
Nick Torraca: No problem! It got me out of kitchen duty and washing dishes. Paul (Abrahams – team director) made us a pasta dinner, so the team was on clean-up duty. But dinner was great!
Elevate-KHS: It is always nice to have dinner made for you! How are the accommodations in Silver City?
NT: Man, we got an awesome place to stay! It’s a Bed and Breakfast built in 1890 and it is right on the crit course. We have the full house for the team and we can sit on the porch swing and watch the other races on Saturday during the crit which is pretty awesome. The coffee shop is also super close, so that is always a win.
Elevate-KHS: This is your 2nd year doing this event, and do you think the shortened Mogollon climb impacted today’s stage?
NT: Yeah, there weren’t as big of time gaps at the finish as before. There was a 25-man group that finished together instead of 1 or 2 riders coming in together like before. I also think the group raced harder into the base of the climb, and then it got pretty chaotic.
Elevate-KHS: How did the race play out for the Elevate-KHS Pro Team?
NT: Alfredo was going for sprints on the stage and he got 3rd on the initial sprint points line of the day. A break of 3 got away after this, taking the 2nd sprints while up the road. The break gained over 5 minutes on the peloton, so Rally Pro Cycling went to the front to bring it back with 20K to go. This made it so the group was together leading into the climb, and we had Eder and Connor placed well in the front. There was a crash going into the base of the climb that held some of our guys up, but that’s racing.
Elevate-KHS: How are you feeling with the altitude? The city of Silver City is at over 7,000ft which is pretty high for a guy from Texas!
NT: Pretty good – I think it was more the heat was a challenge. It was really windy and exposed and hot, and I think I went through over 6 bottles today in 3.5hrs of racing. Great to have our great team support in the car and feed zones to make sure we were well fueled with Infinit Nutrition through out the stage.
Elevatek-KHS: How are you feeling for tomorrow’s Inner Loop Stage?
NT: Tomorrow is a hard stage as I remember. It goes really hard from the gun, and it is going to be important to have good positioning and be ready for the attacks. I am excited for it and I think we can put anyone from our team up the road in a move and have success.
Thank you Nick! And good luck tomorrow!
