Elevate-KHS: This is your first Tour of the Gila. What do you think so far?
Brian McCulloch: I love hard racing and the Tour of the Gila certainly delivers, no doubt about it. So I am excited be here and to have the chance to race another UCI level event with the team.
Elevate-KHS: Today was the 2nd day of racing at altitude, how did it feel?
BMC: The Inner Loop Road Race would be hard no matter what, so the altitude made it even harder. I am not a climber by nature, so I knew I was going to suffer and have to work hard for entire stage. For a race that only lasted 3 hours, this was one of the hardest stages I have raced this season. I am cooked!
Elevate-KHS: With the aggressive racing, partnered with the heat and altitude, what two sponsor products have your relied on over these last two days of racing?
BMC: I am always thankful for our INFINIT Nutrition Custom KHS Blend as it replenishes both my caloric and hydration needs. It works great in all conditions, but I can really tell that with the thin, dry air it really helps. Despite all the climbing that the Tour of The Gila is known for, we are racing at such high speeds that aero is king. With my Q2 clincher carbon wheels I have been able to slice through wind with ease which has been really helpful.
Elevate-KHS: The team has a full contingent of staff on the ground at Gila, how has this impacted the group and the racing?
BMC: Our support staff is incredible. Period. They are incredible. Having Heath Blackgrove – an Olympian – discussing race tactics and ways to get through the race and achieve results for the team is invaluable. Suzanne Sonye, our Soigneur, always gives us extra. At this race, it is individual lunch boxes for each of us with delicious food hand prepared after each stage. Our KHS race bikes are not complete without a Pro Mechanic and Alex Laursen has been working super hard to make sure each of us is dialed in for each stage. We were lucky enough that Paul Abrahams and Heath made us dinner last night. Only caveat was that we had to clean up as a team. This was a great team bonding experience for us provided for us by our team leadership. This is a testament to Paul and how much he gives us and believes in us.
Elevate-KHS: Thanks for checking in Brian, and good luck in tomorrow’s Time Trial!
